History of Kickboxing in India

By now IAKO was the founding member of “All Asian Kickboxing Federation - AAKF” headquartered at Bhiskek, Kyrgyzstan in the year 2000 headed by its President Mr. A. Voinov who is the WAKO Representative of Kyrgyzstan. Kickboxing was recognized during 24th Olympic Council of Asia - OCA General Assembly held in Guangzhou on 9th September 2005. Later stage AAKF was amended to be known as WAKO ASIA and was granted recognition by WAKO during the WAKO ASIA Extraordinary GB Meeting held on  3rd Nov’2006 in  Damascuss, SIRYA under Syrian NOC collaboration and coordination of Syrian Kickboxing Federation and its president Mr. Jalal Maa Al Bared, in the presence of WAKO President Mr. Ennio Falsoni. During the General Assembly, the new statutes and article of constitution were approved and the name of Federation was changed to WAKO Asian Kickboxing Federation (WAKO ASIA). Er. Harichandan attended this historic meeting and was appointed as the Director of WAKO SOUTH ASIA.

By 2010 IAKO Member Associations were established in 27 states, three UT’s and many Armed & Police Units, among which most of them were recognized by their respective Sports Authorities & Olympic Associations.

In 2013 WAKO ASIA conducted the first ever Asian Kickboxing Championship in Pune,Maharastra with support of IAKO MAHARASTRA under the banner of IAKO. Due to some unavoidable terms and unagreeable condition between IAKO and WAKO ASIA there become a dispute, IAKO being one of the founding members of the WAKO Asia, protested in front of WAKO to bring the conditions to settlement. By taking advantage of the situation a group of opportunistic wandering members left IAKO and with foreign support started parallel activities which damaged the good administration and discipline of IAKO. Unfortunately, WAKO President Mr. Ennio Falsoni got bedridden during this time and unable to normalize the situation, hence Er. Harichandan and supporting members of IAKO with a broken heart choose to leave WAKO and keep IAKO away from the dirty politics and promote Kickboxing independently in India by continuing to fight in all levels with a hope to reinstate IAKO in WAKO.

However, IAKO continued to promote Kickboxing as before with WAKO Rules.

Grand Master S.S. Harichandan has been appointed as the sole Representative of WKA for India as its National Director since 2013 till 2020 to keep up the activities of IAKO. He also appointed as the World Commissioner of Kickboxing in World Martial Arts Council.

2019 IAKO takes the pride to celebrate its Silver Jubilee National Kickboxing Championship and standing strong.

In 2021, International Sports Kickboxing Association World President Mr. Cory Scafer has appointed Grandmaster Harichandan as National Director for ISKA India, to promote Combat Sports in India.

Looking back the history has been created and milestone has been achieved, but way too forward to march.
